Seven Things (You Probably Didn’t Know About Me)

Derek wanted me to write a blog of seven things you probably didn’t know about me. But since I’m not a very private person, I really had to think about what to write. This may not be funny, but it should at least be interesting.

  1. I leave funny code comments: I am a web developer, so I spend most of my days looking at code. I’m pretty good about commenting the code so I know what’s going on. When I do comment the code, I make it funny. Sometimes I find the code later and it’s still funny. But my real hope is that someone else will find the code and be either completely confused or amused by it.
  2. I sponsor a child: Her name is Fiona and she lives in Uganda. Julie and I used compassion.com to sponsor her. She just finished 5th grade, and sends us a letter about every 2 months. It’s pretty interesting to see how different life in Uganda is.
  3. I have two albums: I started playing keyboard when I was 5. I can’t read music, but I can play by ear. While in high school, I composed my first album. My second album was done in college. But most people will never hear them, because they aren’t very good.
  4. I do everything spontaneously: My wife hates this, but I make decisions faster than anyone I know. I just have this theory that I can (usually) make a decision, and if the outcome sucks, I can change my mind and choose something else, or at least learn a lesson for next time.
  5. I shot the Texas state bird: When I was 13, my parents bought me a BB Gun. While out on a walk through a pasture, I saw a bird land on the top of a tree. My friend told me, “Shoot that bird.” I said, “There’s no way I can hit it. It’s too high up.” She said, “Just try it.” So I did. And believe it or not, it fell out of the tree. We ran over to it, and it was dead. And then my friend said, “Oh man, that’s a mockingbird.” We buried it, and never told anyone… until now.
  6. I always wanted to be an actor: When I was a kid, my parents took me to some modeling thing because I wanted to be an actor. They basically made me walk up and down a runway, and we never heard from them again. But in my free time, I would pretend that cameras were following me everywhere. I would splash my face with water and run down the street, hiding behind trees and yelling into the sky at whoever was following me. And that’s why The Truman Show is my favorite movie.
  7. I’m going to be a dad: We’ve known since Cinco de Mayo, but decided to wait until the first ultrasound to announce it. During the ultrasound, we saw and heard the heartbeat, saw the brain, and saw the little arm and leg nubbins. We’re due January 13, 2010. The funny thing is, Julie has a friend that is having twins due January 13. Also, my buddy Zach’s wife, Amy, is having a baby… due January 13th. We announced the pregnancy to my parents by sending them a video of photos from our wedding and our life thus far. Watch the video on YouTube or here:
